What is it?

Sunflower protein comes from sunflower seeds. After oil extraction, the remaining sunflower meal undergoes dehulling and phenolic compound removal processes, ultimately yielding a creamy-white powder with a protein content exceeding 50%. This technology was initially developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, and the product has already entered the markets of Germany, France, Italy, and Brazil.

How does it compare to other plant proteins?

Anyone who has used pea protein knows that the beany taste is a nuisance. The biggest advantage of sunflower protein is its neutral taste. Joint research by Brazilian and German scientists found that after removing the sunflower seed shell and phenolic compounds, the resulting product has "a very neutral flavor and aroma."

Light color, a natural creamy white, avoids imparting an undesirable dark or greenish tint to the final product. Free of common allergens and not genetically modified.

What about its nutritional value?

According to a joint study published by ITAL in Brazil and Fraunhofer IVV in Germany, a meat patty made with sunflower protein provides 49% of the daily recommended intake of iron, 68% of zinc, 95% of magnesium, and 89% of manganese per serving. The study also indicates that the essential amino acid composition of sunflower protein is quite ideal.

Where can it be used?

It can be naturally incorporated into iced coffee, yogurt drinks, plant-based milk, and ready-to-drink protein beverages. In plant-based meat products, it can also be extruded to form a meat-like fibrous structure. Most existing production lines can use it directly with only minor adjustments.
